Beacon Foundation links school students with business and industry
The Beacon Foundation has supported the school through a number of fruitful partnerships over the years. Beacon works with schools, businesses and communities to help bring relevance to the curriculum, and inspire young people to think about careers and experience the workplace, long before they leave school.
Through Beacon, Year 10 students enjoy the experience of Speed Careering in which mentors from business and industry come along to talk about their career stories. Beacon also supports the Mock Interview program in which students prepare for and experience a job interview with representatives from a number of businesses.
ASPIRE Program – University of NSW
ASPIRE is a program based at the University of NSW that helps school students find out about university and decide whether it might be right for them. UNSW have a comprehensive program from Years 7 to 12 and we are now in partnership with them to deliver the program at James Meehan High School.
Year 12 students hoping to attend university also work with mentors from the University of NSW.
Years 7 & 8 students participate in workshops about aspirations. This program provides fun activities which help students feel comfortable in the university environment.
UNSW invites selected Year 11 students to attend the Step UP Program. This is a three day on-campus program designed to give students an insight into university study and teaching. Students look at study skills and what it takes to prepare for the independent learning environment of university.
Lawfirms Encouraging and Assisting Promising Students (LEAPS)
The enduring partnership between Minter Ellison Lawyers and James Meehan High School began in 2004 and continues with the LEAPS program, in which promising Year 9 students are mentored by members of the law firm. Throughout Terms 2 and 3, students and their mentors meet fortnightly for lunch and workshops in the Minter Ellison offices in Sydney.
In 2014 the school celebrated 10 years of LEAPS with Minter Ellison. Check out our 10th Anniversary video.
Plan-it Youth
Plan-it-Youth links community members with young people needing support to continue at school or to prepare for the transition out of school. Mentors bring their life experiences and provide a sounding board for students as they discuss the challenges of school, relationships with peers and teachers, and thoughts about training and employment.
